- Abstract
- The functioning of an experimental flow-through ecosystem has been studied in Chistyi Pond (Moscow). During blooming of cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa, the abundance of the filter feeder Simocephalus vetulus in the water body reached 627 specimen/L at a biomass of 96 mg/L. As the result, phytoplankton biomass in the ecosystem decreased within one hour from 41 to 6 mg/L and the biomass of cyanobacteria, from 29 to 2 mg/L. Zooplankton filtration in the flow-through ecosystem led to suppression of blooming and rehabilitation of water quality.
