- Abstract
- The article analyzes the heavy metal pollution of the environment in the area of influence of the copper-nickel combine Severonickel (Monchegorsk, Murmansk Oblast), where an acute ecological situation has been observed for many years. To detect pollution in winter, natural indicators such as snow cover and sphagnum moss were used. The analysis showed that, as before, the plant continues to have a significant impact on the environment, although with a much lower intensity. The maximum pollution is noted in the vicinity of the combine Monchegorsk (within a radius of 5 km from the industrial site) and in the city of Monchegorsk itself. Among the main pollutants are copper, nickel and zinc. In the overwhelming majority of sampling points the content of other heavy metals in snow (chromium, cadmium, cobalt, lead) did not exceed the background ones. The data of bryoindication studies confirm the high level of environmental pollution in the vicinity of the copper-nickel plant, and also indicate the spread of pollutants at a considerable distance from it (up to 35-40 km).
