- Abstract
- As a result of waste sorting facility operations, significant volumes of screenings from municipal solid waste (MSW) sorting are generated, which are most commonly sent to landfills. The lack of systematized data on its physical and chemical characteristics across different particle size fractions complicates the selection of optimal technologies for further utilization. The objective of this study is to determine the density, moisture and ash content of the MSW sorting screenings. The obtained data will enable prediction of the behavior of the MSW screenings during disposal and processing. Density influences the compaction and settlement behavior during landfilling, while high moisture and ash content reduce the value of the screening fraction as either a fertilizer or a fuel source. The results of these field measurements may be useful in designing waste treatment systems and selecting technological solutions for the utilization of MSW screenings.
