- Abstract
- Nowadays local government is under growing pressure to ensure its operations are responsive to the needs of citizens. As a result, strategic planning became widely used by municipal governments as a tool to establish a formalized strategic plan. Strategic planning has been used in municipalities for 20 years now, but little is known about how it is used and the results obtained. The article provides a systematic process of strategic planning in municipalities that includes gathering information about the municipal activities and using it to establish a long-term direction and then translate that direction into specific goals, objectives, and actions. This article explores the state of the practice of strategic planning in local government using a framework drawn from the extensive literature on strategic planning in the public sector.
