- Abstract
- An universal approach to the design of Ni-, Ti- and Cr-based high-temperature alloys is proposed. It is based on a concept that under given structural conditions, the strength characteristics of high-temperature alloys are mainly determined by interatomic bonding given by the cohesive energy in the bulk and by interatomic bonding given by the cohesive strength of the grain boundary. On the basis of the results of ab initio calculations it is demonstrated that there are the same series of the transition metals suitable for any high-temperature alloys based on Ni-, Ti- and Cr. In the case of Ni-base superalloys we take into account both the bulk and grain boundary interatomic strength.
