- Abstract
- This paper deals with the attempts to obtain oxidation-resistant SiC coatings on model carbon-carbon (C-C) exit cones. The SiC layers have been deposited according to the low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) technique in a cold-wall reactor using singl-source precursor methylsilane (CH3SiH3) without a dilution by H2 and inert gases. The SiC layers were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the oxidation resistance of SiC coated C-C composites were examined at high temperatures. It was found that polycrystalline cubic SiC layers were obtained at low growth temperatures 600-800 °C. The oxidation resistance of the SiC coated C-C composites was quite excellent. So the weight loss of the coated specimens after 30 minutes exposure in air at 1150 °C was considerably lower than of uncoated C-C composites.
